Competition is open to all artists and all mediums
Entry deadline is February 1st, 2012
Fairport, NY—The Fairport Perinton Merchants Association (FPMA) is holding its seventh annual competition open to all artists and all mediums to create a unique poster depicting the extremely popular annual Fairport Canal Days Festival on the occasion of its 35th anniversary year.
The contest is being held in response to public demand for a commemorative poster.
“Last year’s poster was a big hit with the buying public, we’ve sold over a thousand since they were introduced seven years ago.” according to Jan Dwyer, local merchant and poster committee co-chair.
Lorraine Staunch was the winner of last year’s contest. “We’re pleased with the public response, but not surprised considering the terrific job Staunch did in capturing the essence of Fairport” according to Kim Guida, President of the Fairport Merchants Association.
Once again the goal is to deliver a poster on par with those that can be found at the nation’s greatest festivals. To ensure that status, only a limited quantity of the winning poster entry will be printed and available for purchase during the festival.
This year’s winner will receive the opportunity to autograph the posters depicting their work at a booth during our Fairport Canal Days celebration. The winning art may appear on posters, note cards, and other promotional materials for the Village of Fairport.
“We encourage contestants to think in terms of a complete poster design, though entrants submitting art-only works will be given full consideration,” said Douglas Sharp, Co-Chairman of Canal Days.
Winning artist will be notified the week of April 23rd. Winning artwork will be revealed to the public in early May.
The Fairport Canal Days Festival is one of the largest two-day festivals in the northeast, drawing over 250,000 people to the picturesque village each year. The festival is the only one of its kind produced solely on volunteer basis. This ensures that a maximum amount of the funds raised are used to benefit non-profit merchant events and local charities. The festival will take place Friday through Sunday, June 1, 2, 3, 2012.

The Fairport Merchants Association (FPMA) has announced that the winner of the 34th Anniversary Fairport Canal Days Festival poster contest is Lorraine Staunch.
Lorraine, a resident of Fairport, is a graduate of Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, FL, where she majored in painting and minored in sculpture. Upon graduating she was hired as head illustrator at a Christmas design firm in Forest City, NC, drew thousands of portraits at Walt Disney World, designed and painted sets for several community theater productions, exhibited one-woman shows and has won many awards for her paintings.
“I strive to bring imagination and energy to all that I paint – murals or canvases. My work reflects the personality of my subjects as seen through my eyes, filtered through my mind and experience and committed in paint through my hands,” said Staunch.
Over thirteen years ago Staunch opened, now owns and operates, a mural/faux finishing company with a concentration in murals, faux finishes, large paintings, design and color selection for your home. You can see her murals and faux finishes on her website www.staunchart.com , all over Fairport including Perinton Rec. Center, Red Bird Market, and Assumption Church, Katie Shirley’s Closet in Perinton, NY among others..
“Lately, I have been working and experimenting in Acrylic and various polymers. I love the colors' vibrancy and the flexibility of this medium.”
The inspiration for her latest work was easy to find in Fairport. “As I was sitting on the canal bank painting this piece, Canal Days Celebration, in my mind I could hear the sounds of the local crew team practicing on the canal. The swirling of the water as the oars cut the surface. So I painted them in. I love spending time on the towpath. It is so Fairport.”
Doug Sharp, Chairman of Fairport Canal Days, opined: “The piece is bright, colorful, and highly symbolic of Fairport’s ever-popular waterfront, we love it.
The finished work has been printed in a limited quantity of 500 - 16 x 20 full-color posters. Staunch will be available to personally sign posters at booth SME 210, located in front of Village Hall. Poster prints may be purchased for $10 each at the Village Hall information booth during the festival..
