Fairport Canal Days: 2008 Poster Contest
The Fairport-Perinton Merchants Association (FPMA) is happy to announce the winning design for this year's Fairport Canal Days Festival poster contest! You can see the winning design at the right.
Penfield resident Joel Cuminale is the 2008 winning artist. Cuminale calls his creation “a post-modern, post-psychedelia, post-impressionism, representation of the crowds at Canal Days.” Cuminale owns Turning Point Signs and Design in the village of Fairport.
Each year, the FPMA invites artists to create a unique poster that depicts Fairport Canal Days. Our goal is to deliver a poster on par with those that can be found at the nation's greatest festivals. A limited number of posters will be available for sale at the festival to ensure the collectible nature of the poster.
“Stylistically it’s a significant departure from our previous posters but there was something about it that made us all gravitate towards choosing it.” according to Doug Sharp, Chairman of the Fairport Canal Days Committee, which undertook the judging.
As the winning artist Cuminale receives a grand prize of $250 for the winning entry, and a free booth in which to display his work, and autograph posters and wine labels during Canal Days. This year’s contest drew a record number of entries from artists ranging in age from elementary school students to senior citizens, amateur to professional. In one case, a family of four each submitted an entry. The 28 entries varied from art-only works to complete poster designs.
New this year, Canal Days will feature a unique keepsake for festival goers. Fairport’s own Finger Lakes winery, Casa Larga Vineyards, will be featuring the 2008 poster design on 3 award winning wines: Blush, Vineyard Hill Chardonnay and Petite Noir. These commemorative wines provide a memorable keepsake while representing the close bonds found within the Fairport community. The wines will be available for sale at the Tasting Room at the Vineyard, various local retail locations, and during Canal Days at Casa Larga's booth.
The winning works become the property of The Fairport Merchant’s Association (FPMA) and FPMA will have sole use of such work.
