Fairport Canal Days: 2007 Poster Contest
The Fairport Merchants Association (FPMA) is happy to announce that the winner of the 30th Anniversary Fairport Canal Days Festival poster contest is Dick Sillick. Sillick and wife, Linda, have lived in the Village of Fairport for 24 years. Currently Sillick is Creative Director for Cognitive Marketing Inc., a company specializing in brand management and strategic planning for educational institutions.
Sillick tried to capture the "...happy, friendly, festival atmosphere as though seeing it through the eyes of a child. A kid's perspective seems to an adult to be so different, almost surreal." Sillick's child-like whimsy is reflected in the forms of animals he incorporated in the clouds of the image. Look for an elephant, an alligator and a cat, "and anything else your imagination can conjure up," said Sillick.
"The piece is bright, colorful, and highly symbolic of Fairport's ever-popular waterfront," according to Ed Bradford, President of the Fairport Merchants Association.
The finished work has been printed in a limited quantity of 1,000 - 16 x 20 full-color posters. Sillick will be available to personally sign posters at booth SME 210, located in front of Village Hall. Poster prints may be purchased for $10 each at information booths during the festival.
Sillick's artwork for the Fairport Canal Days poster was created from a digital photo of The Box Factory taken a couple of summers ago. It was imported into Adobe PhotoShop and manipulated with various filters and image adjustment tools. The people were added and the clouds shaped with digital brushes. The water and reflections were enhanced and shifted in color. The building name was added as signage above the top windows (even though the signage does not exist.) All of this was done in stages and saved as a new version at each step. The final version was saved and then imported into Adobe Illustrator to convert the art from pixels to paths. That file was imported into QuarkXpress to create the poster and then exported as a PDF file for reproduction.
The Fairport Canal Days Festival is one of the largest festivals in the northeast, drawing over 200,000 people to the picturesque village each year. The festival is the only one of its kind, produced solely on volunteer basis. This ensures that a maximum amount of funds are raised to benefit non-profit merchant events and local charities. The festival will take place Friday through Sunday, June 2,3,4 2006.
